Norwegian is the official language of Norway and has around 5 million speakers, most of whom live in Norway.
It is a member of the North Germanic family of languages along with Danish, Swedish, Faroese and Icelandic.
There are two versions of Norwegian: Bokmål, closely related to Danish and used by a large majority of the population, and Nyorsk, based on old Norwegian before Danish rule and used by a minority mainly in rural areas and western Norway. Attempts to unify the two have been unsuccessful and the media and government bodies use both to maintain political harmony.
